Lions’ Lunte shoots career low, places 25th

? Lawrence High junior Kathryn Lunte led the city qualifers Monday at the Class 6A state golf tournament at Dodge City Country Club.

Lunte shot a 90, her career low, to finish 25th.

“Being at the state tournament, shooting a 90 is really outstanding for her,” LHS coach Mike Lewis said. “It’s a good stepping stone for her.”

Free State senior Grace Brahler, who won the regional tournament last week in Kansas City, Kan., by shooting an 80, recorded a 100 in the state tournament.

Brahler, who has played really well over the past few weeks, struggled on Monday, Free State coach Craig Hershiser said.

“Needless to say, it was very disappointing for her,” Hershiser said. “It was one of those days that happens to a lot of golfers … It was really unfortunate that it happened at the state tournament.”

The Firebirds’ other qualifer, junior Alyson Butler, shot a 110. It was Butler’s first state tournament.

Lawrence High sophomore Payton Covert, who also was playing in the state tournament for the first time, finished with a 122.

Blue Valley North won the team title.
