100 years ago: Robber’s father says girl drove Bullock crazy

From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 14, 1909: The father of Ross Bullock, who robbed the Eudora bank twice and was killed in the second attemp,t says it was a girl who caused Bullock to rob and kill. The father said the girl drove his son crazy. Ross killed a Lawrence lawman Oct. 11 after robbing the Eudora bank and had been on the run until yesterday when he again tried to rob the Eudora bank, shot a worker there and then apparently killed himself. A young accomplice quickly gave up. The wound that Eudora bank worker Fred Starr suffered was facial but not serious and it appears he will have a full recovery. The Bullock case is the talk of Lawrence and large crowds have gathered outside the Daily World office to keep up on the latest news about the events that have created one robbery, a failed second robbery attempt, the death of a Lawrence lawman at Bullock’s hands, the shooting of Starr and the apparent suicide of Bullock after the second robbery effort. The amount taken from the bank before the latest shootings amounted to only about $10 since about $570 was recovered after Bullock died. He had stuffed the money into his clothing and it was recovered.
