Baker University students were honored May 2 at the Baker Undergraduate Research and Performance Symposium at the Collins Center. Ashley Snedeger, Baldwin City, was honored as a Mildred Hunt Riddle Honors Scholar. Named to Alpha Delta Sigma, Baker’s highest academic honorary society, were: Heidi Compton, Lawrence; David Foltz, Perry; and Chelsey Forge, Oskaloosa.

U.S. Rep Lynn Jenkins announced May 3 that Drue Davis, Free State High School junior, won the 2009 Congressional Art Competition.

Students from the 2nd Congressional District submitted artwork for the competition. The first-place piece, a self-portrait entitled “Ragazza Verde” by Davis, will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year, and the three runners-up will have their artwork displayed in Jenkins’ offices in Topeka, Pittsburg and Washington, D.C. Brittany Long, Lawrence High School senior; Chloe Porter, Free State senior; and Charika Billie, Free State senior, were runners-up in the competition.

Kansas University’s political science department recognized top students at its annual honors banquet April 23 at Alvamar Country Club.

Twenty-eight students were inducted into the Gamma chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, a national political science honor society. Area students initiated into Pi Sigma Alpha were: Jacob Longaker, De Soto; Francesca Chambers, Joshua Gapetz and Brant Richardson, all of Lawrence; and Matthew Miles, Lecompton. Longaker and Sara Shannon, Ottawa, received the political science faculty award, and Gapetz received the Harley S. Nelson Family Fund Scholarship. A. Bani Singh, Lawrence, has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal arts from St. John’s College, Santa Fe, N.M. Each senior is required to write and defend a senior essay in an oral examination as a requirement of graduation. Singh’s senior essay was entitled “‘Come ye daughters help me lament’: Bach’s Invocation of the A-rational and the Feminine.”

Jennifer Hornbaker, Lawrence, received the High Scholarship Award in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences during an April 5 ceremony at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. The award is given to undergraduate students who rank in the top 2 percent of their college class.
