Juvenile jails prepare for outbreak

? Authorities in charge of Kansas’ 358 youth inmates have geared up for the possibility of a swine flu outbreak at the state’s three juvenile correctional facilities.

The Juvenile Justice Authority issued a memo Tuesday to all staff outlining plans to monitor the spread of swine flu and minimize exposure to any of the youths or staff.

The memo — issued by Deputy Commissioner Dennis Casarona and Dr. Mary Redmon, one of the agency’s oversight physicians — comes on the heels of staff concerns over two unauthorized memos issued earlier this month at juvenile correctional facilities in Beloit and in Larned requesting staff start making personal plans in the unlikely event of a quarantine.

Bill Miskell, spokesman for the Juvenile Justice Authority, said Wednesday that staff members are no longer being asked to prepare for a quarantine.

“We don’t think it is necessary at this point,” Miskell said.

Miskell said that the two quarantine memos were issued without the review of the commissioner or the deputy commissioner or the authority’s health care oversight contractor.

“It was not meant to alarm them, and apparently there are a number of staff alarmed about the idea someone at some point of the future may order the facility to be quarantined,” Miskell said.

Visitors are still allowed at the juvenile facilities, but they are being screened for flu symptoms, according to Tuesday’s memo.
