Kansas University faculty members at a public forum advocated bringing the KU athletics department under the authority of faculty governance to help avoid conflicts with the university’s “academic mission.” Panel members urged establishment of a special committee to form a direct link between faculty governance organizations and the athletic department. Panelist Deanell Tacha, vice chancellor for academic affairs, said the university needed “more substantive involvement of faculty in the academic advising of student athletes. Others taking part on behalf of faculty representatives were Jim Carothers and David Shulenberger.

Lawrence Mayor David Longhurst took himself out of the running for the coming vote on the new mayor. Several said they thought Commissioner Ernest Angino would be a good choice.

Gov. John Carlin was expected to OK the increase of the Kansas drinking age from 18 to 21, if and when final legislation occurred. Controversy continued over the issue.
