Topeka ? Democratic leaders in the Kansas Legislature appear resigned to a modest cut in aid to public schools as part of the budget.

Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley, of Topeka, even said Friday that the compromise budget lawmakers will consider is “a good result.”

The deal emerged Thursday night from negotiations between the House and Senate over a $13 billion-plus budget for the state’s 2010 fiscal year, which begins July 1.

It would cut aid to public schools about $25 million, or 0.7 percent.

The compromise occurred after negotiators backed away from significant cuts in higher education operating budgets.

The negotiators said that if the state is to claim federal stimulus funds, it can’t cut higher ed deeply and not touch public schools very much.
