Joanna Loewen, Lawrence, a junior, was named to the dean’s list, with honors, for the fall 2008 semester at Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, by earning a grade point average between 3.6 and 3.79.

Faith LaVon Baxter, Overbrook, and Tom and Kim Swearngin were recognized nationally by the American Angus Association for having registered Angus cows included in the association’s 2009 Pathfinder Report.

The Pathfinder Program identifies superior Angus cows based upon recorded performance traits that are economically important to efficient beef production. All registered Angus cows that meet the strict Pathfinder standards are listed, along with their owners, in the Pathfinder Report that is published annually.

Dixie and Stephen Russell, Paxico, announce the birth of their son, Corbin Michael Russell, on Feb. 17, 2009, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka.

His maternal grandparents are Richard and Shirley Theurer, Wellington; and paternal grandparents are Robert and Michal Ann Russell, Baldwin City.

Andrei Elliott, eighth-grader at Southwest Junior High, competed in the high school section of the Mulvane chess tournament on Feb. 28, in Mulvane, and earned the 15th place medal.

Free State and Central Junior High schools won the first-place team trophies, in K-12 and K-8 sections, Feb. 28 in the Christ the King Scholastic Chess Tournament in Topeka. Third-place team trophies went to Lawrence High School in K-12 and Quail Run in the K-8 and K-5 sections. WSU awards summa cum laude to students who graduate with an academic average of 3.9 or higher; magna cum laude award with an average of 3.55-3.89; and cum laude to graduates with a 3.25-3.54 academic average.

Mary Cottrell and Joe Harrell, both of Lawrence, were awarded scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year by the education department of Washburn University.

Cottrell, a junior pursuing an elementary education degree, with a concentration in middle school mathematics, received the Charles & Margaret Pollack Education Scholarship. To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must be a junior or a senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in elementary education or secondary education.

Harrell, a senior majoring in elementary education, with a concentration in special education, received the Martha Peyton Fensch Endowed Scholarship. To receive this scholarship, a student must be an education major and have an overall grade point average of 2.5 and a 2.75 grade point average in professional and general education classes and in courses required for licensure.
