Conservation group bestows award

Kansas Association for Conservation and Environmental Education (KACEE) has announced that Rex Buchanan, of the Kansas Geological Survey in Lawrence, was named a recipient of the 2009 Excellence in Conservation and Environmental Education Awards.

Winners will be recognized April 3 at the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka, at a ceremony featuring Buchanan as the speaker.

Buchanan received The John K. Strickler Award, which honors the lifetime achievements, contributions and leadership of individuals in the Kansas conservation and environmental education field. The award was named after John Strickler, a KACEE founder and its first executive director.

Buchanan, associate director for public outreach at KGS, has devoted decades of service to environmental education in Kansas.

He is also an author, and has twice served as president of KACEE and as its secretary and newsletter editor.
