Go with the flow when replacing bathroom faucet

If your old faucet handles are approximately 4 inches apart, you can replace the faucet with any standard lavatory faucet. If they are farther apart, you’ll need a wide-spread handle faucet.

If your lavatory faucet is beyond repair, or you just want an updated look, replacing an old bathroom faucet is easier than you think.

Step 1: Turn off the water supply to your existing faucet and remove the old faucet. Begin by unscrewing the supply lines connected below the faucet. You may need a flexible head faucet wrench to accomplish this goal. Once the lines are removed, unscrew the retaining nuts located on the faucet nipples above where the lines were connected. If you have a pop-up drain assembly, you will also need to disconnect the lift rod from the strap assembly by unscrewing the thumb screw located behind the bowl of the sink. Carefully pry the faucet up from the rim of the sink and remove any sealant material found below.

Step 2: Clean and dry the area thoroughly before inserting your new faucet. If the new faucet came with a pre-formed neoprene gasket, place the gasket on the bottom of the faucet plate. If it did not come with a gasket, spread a layer of silicone sealant on the bottom of the faucet plate.

Step 3: Insert the new faucet into the sink holes and position it correctly. Tighten the faucet into place by screwing the plastic retaining nuts onto the faucet nipples from below the sink.

Step 4: Once the faucet is securely in place, wrap two to three layers of Teflon plumber’s tape clockwise onto the sink nipples. Connect the supply lines to the nipples and hand-tighten them.

Step 5: Turn the water supply back on and check for leaks. Continue to tighten the supply lines onto the faucet nipples until all leaks are eliminated.

Step 6: Remove the aerator from the new sink faucet and turn the water on, using both handles, to remove any debris from the lines. Shut the water off and replace the faucet aerator. If you have a pop-up drain assembly, attach it according to the faucet instructions.
