Kansas University Hospital was the only hospital in the region to be named to the 2009 U.S. News and World Report Best Hospitals list in more than one category.

Its heart and heart surgery program was recognized for the third consecutive year. In addition, KU Hospital’s kidney program and ear, nose and throat program earned honors.

“Our goal is to be the best hospital in the country for patient care. The growing national recognition for our programs is a tribute to our physicians, nurses, ancillary care professionals and the entire staff,” Bob Page, president and chief executive officer, said in a news release.

The heart and heart surgery program ranked 39th, down four spots from last year. The ear, nose and throat program ranked 36th and the kidney program was 48th.

KU Hospital, in Kansas City, Kan., has 574 staffed beds and serves more than 21,000 inpatients annually.

St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, Mo., also made the list. It ranked 37th in urology.
