Kansas’ House delegation split on a bill expanding health care coverage for children from working families.

U.S. Reps. Dennis Moore, D-Lenexa, and Jerry Moran, R-Hays, voted for the proposal, which passed 289-139. U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Topeka, and Todd Tiahrt, R-Goddard, voted against.

Jenkins, whose district includes west Lawrence, said she voted no because it would cover children from families that were above low-income, which she said was beyond the original intent of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.

“We need to refocus the SCHIP program on the people it was created for — low-income children,” Jenkins said in a news release.

And she said the legislation increased the opportunity for fraud by enabling illegal immigrants to enroll in the program.

But Gary Brunk, president and chief executive officer of Kansas Action for Children, said Jenkins’ statements were “mistruths and distortions of the actual legislation.” He said the legislation would not cover illegal immigrants.

“I am very disappointed in Congresswoman Jenkins’ vote today on SCHIP,” Brunk said.
