The Mardi Gras parade Tuesday can mean only one thing: Ash Wednesday is just around the corner.

Dozens of local Catholics gathered at Saint John’s Catholic Church, 1208 Kentucky, Wednesday morning to receive a mark of ashes, symbolizing the beginning of Lent for Catholics and thousands of other Christians in Lawrence.

Lent lasts until Easter, which is on April 12 this year.
