Hippopotamus at Topeka Zoo dies

? A longtime inhabitant of the Topeka Zoo has died.

Peka Sue, a 47-year-old Nile River hippopotamus, died Sunday night.

Zoo Director Mike Coker says the animal was one of the oldest hippos in captivity. Peka Sue was born on June 5, 1961, at the zoo in Kansas City, Mo., and was brought in 1966 to Topeka.

Hippos normally live 45 to 50 years in captivity.

Coker says Peka Sue received veterinary care after she was found to be lethargic on Saturday morning.

An examination of the hippo’s remains revealed nothing significant. Additional test results are pending.
