Sexual, domestic violence increasing in Kansas

? Advocates say most victims of sexual or domestic assault in Kansas don’t know where to go for help, and they fear that the economic crisis will lead to more violence.

Victims’ advocates with the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual or Domestic Violence met Wednesday to talk about a rise in the number of victims and possible funding cuts.

Coalition director Sandy Barnett said during the annual Safe Homes, Safe Streets Awareness Day that the number of victims is rising with the level of funding, due to better awareness. But her group worries that its funds will be cut as state officials look for ways to save money.

Advocates said the spiraling economy could boost demand as families on the brink experience added stress. The coalition is hoping for funding to remain at current levels as the need for help increases.
