Pedestrian signal set for Ninth Street, north of Hillcrest School

New signals were installed Wednesday for the pedestrian crossing in the 900 block of N.H. just outside the Lawrence Arts Center. Patrick Keller with J. Warren Company of Topeka works from a bucket lift attaching one of the new signals.

Lawrence is about to get another new set of pedestrian-activated crosswalk signals.

Signals are in place — but not yet operational — for a crossing on Ninth Street, between Hilltop and Sunset drives. The crossing is at the top of a hill, north of Hillcrest School.

Lawrence city commissioners approved the estimated $35,000 project in July, after hearing from neighbors concerned about pedestrian safety.

Similar signals are being installed this week at a crossing on New Hampshire Street, in front of the Lawrence Arts Center. Both sets of the overhead signals will function like an existing set at a crossing on 11th Street, midway between New York and New Jersey streets.

The signals go red with the press of a button, then turn to flashing red — the signal version of a stop sign — soon after pedestrians begin to cross. A vehicle, once stopped, can proceed through the flashing light after pedestrians have passed.
