Perry — Perry-Lecompton High guard Shane Gimzo drove to the paint at will, scoring four layups in the fourth quarter — the last of which came in acrobatic fashion and broke a tie with 31 seconds remaining — to lead the Kaws to a thrilling 49-45 boys basketball victory over Tonganoxie on Friday.

Down 46-44 after Gimzo’s lay-in, Chieftains junior forward Keaton Schaffer missed a shot inside, and THS fouled Gimzo when he secured the rebound.

The senior, who scored a game-high 19 points, missed the first of his two free-throw attempts, but drained the second to put PLHS up three with 22 seconds left.

Schaffer attempted a three on the next possession and was fouled in the act with 13.2 on the clock. He went to the foul line and was short on the first two before hitting his third.

Up by two, the Kaws found a streaking Brad Phillips on the ensuing inbound play to seal the game.

Prior to a 20-10 PLHS advantage in the final eight minutes, Tonganoxie (8-6 overall, 4-3 Kaw Valley League) looked to be in good shape after the third quarter, when THS outscored the Kaws, 10-4, thanks to threes from Jace Waters and Brandon Yoder, a Schaffer bucket and two free throws from Austin Smith.

Junior sub Yoder scored the Chieftains’ final eight points in the second quarter to help THS to a halftime tie and led Tonganoxie with 14 points. Senior center Smith scored 11 and tied the game at 44 by hitting two free throws with :50 left.

Kaws senior forward Joel Gantz scored 15 points.

Tonganoxie will play host to Bonner Springs on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Kansas City Ward 52, Santa Fe Trail 34

Carbondale — Jason Lee led Trail (3-11) with nine points, and Dalton Abel added eight.

Gardner-Edgerton 56, Baldwin 46

Baldwin City — Gardner-Edgerton jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead, then went on to win by the same margin.

Baldwin (8-6) cut the Trailblazers’ lead to single digits in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hit late three-pointers.

Gardner-Edgerton was led by Bubba Starling, who scored 19 points.

Justin Vander Tuig led the Bulldogs with 18.

Louisburg 60, Eudora 43

Eudora — Eudora led by seven at the half, but was outscored by 16 in the second half.

Justin Ballock led Eudora (9-6, 2-2) with 16 points, and Cody Carlson and Brian Katzfey each added seven for Eudora.

De Soto 66, Spring Hill 42

Spring Hill — De Soto’s Jamel Townsend dominated the interior, scoring 17 points from inside the paint.

Freshman Mason Wedel came off the bench at the guard spot and had a stellar night of his own, tallying 20 points after shooting 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. Aaron Nutterfield scored 10 and had three blocked shots.

The Wildcats (11-4) will travel Wednesday to Atchison.

Mill Valley 53, Basehor-Linwood 52

Shawnee — Max Carroll had 18 points and Tanner Rainbolt 12 as Mill Valley squeaked past Basehor-Linwood.

Tonganoxie 46, Perry-Lecompton 36

Perry — Tonganoxie held Perry-Lecompton scoreless for the first 6:38 of the fourth quarter.

The Chieftains outscored Perry, 10-0, in that stretch, as senior point guard Chrissie Jeannin scored six of her 13 points, Andie Jeannin cashed one of her three three-pointers, and Lauren Hall hit a free throw.

After going scoreless in the first quarter, Perry-Lecompton’s Megan Elder got on track in the second quarter, when she scored nine straight points, helping the Kaws to a one-point halftime lead.

Spring Hill 50, De Soto 28

Spring Hill — Only Shelbi Petty reached double-figures for De Soto, as she scored 11 points, all of which came in the second half. Katie Williams and Kelsey Fisher tallied five and six, respectively.

Gardner-Edgerton 33, Baldwin 28

Baldwin City — Despite leading for more than 28 minutes, Baldwin dropped its fourth consecutive game.

The Bulldogs (6-8) scored only four points in the final 5:50. Tracie Weege led Baldwin with 12 points.
