Topeka — A study finds Kansas is fourth in the nation in the rate of black homicides.
The study came from nonprofit Violence Policy Center in Washington D.C., which supports gun-control efforts.
The study found that there were about 32 homicides per 100,000 black Kansas residents in 2006. Pennsylvania was first, followed by Michigan and Indiana.
The report analyzed the most recent data available from the FBI.
Kansas didn’t make the top five in the previous two studies.
Co-author and Violence Policy Center Executive Director Josh Sugarmann says the results show that the role of guns in black homicides must be addressed.

There was a pilot program that was completed in Kansas City in the mid-1990's which helped reduce crime statistics in a particular neighborhood dramatically. The results of this study have been cited in other studies. I know that these programs may require extra funding, but I wonder if the cost wouldn't be offset by the savings in human suffering, law enforcement investigations of violent crimes and the cost of housing convicted violent offenders. Here's a briefer description of the study I mentioned above. I don't know if the same laws apply in terms of concealed weapons now as in 1992-1993 when the study was done. Also don't know how a program like this was viewed by gun rights advocates. http://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles/kang.pdf

So they say "homicides," but did every single black person murdered get killed with a gun? Nobody was stabbed? Beaten? There are plenty of ways to kill a man that don't require a gun.
