100 years ago: City looking into milk inspection

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 14, 1909: Facts have come to light of late about the quality of milk Lawrence people are drinking and a movement has been started to appoint a city milk inspector in the interest of public health. Licensed vendors of milk should have regular inspections. The state is not able to do this well enough and often enough so it should be done locally. . . . The Salvation Army has launched its Christmas aid program for needy families and evidence is that more than 200 children will be helped in the way food, clothing and gifts. Adults also are to be aided as much as possible. A free moving picture will be provided for a holiday event and a rummage sale is planned to help the unfortunate as much as possible. . . . While coasting down Ohio Street on a bobsled lst evening, Virginia Melvin, 5, was thrown from the sled and suffered a fracture skull when her head hit a curbing. Her wrist was also broken. The sled, driven by a student, was traveling at a tremendous rate of speed. A piece of the girl’s skull had to be extracted but it appears she will make a full recovery.
