25 years ago: Lawrence delegates prepare for Republican National Convention

Ken Martinez and Donna Shultz of Lawrence were to be among the delegates at the Republican National Convention in Dallas and Bernice Todd of Lawrence was to be an alternate. Even though incumbent president Ronald Reagan was a shoo-in for the nomination, the local delegates predicted a lively planning session focusing on the fall voting.

Phil Minkin and Pat Kehde were the authors of “The KU/Lawrence Trivia Quiz Book” set to hit local bookshelves soon. The publication, due any minute from the printer, was “loaded with information many won’t know,” said one early reader.

A self-help support group for family or friends of suicide victims was to be offered locally by the Mental Health Assn. of Shawnee County.

Both heart transplant patients at the Kansas University Medical Center said they were feeling fine and were eager to go home. They were James Hale and Clara Sallaz. Both had been part of a pioneering heart surgery venture at the medical center.
