— Officials Tuesday urged Kansans to buy from the ever-growing number of farmers markets in the state.

“The fruits and vegetables available at Kansas farmers markets typically are harvested within 24 hours of market day, and you just can’t beat that for freshness and flavor,” said Acting Secretary of Agriculture Josh Svaty.

More consumer demand has increased the number of Kansas farmers markets from 26 in 1987 to 81 currently.

Gov. Mark Parkinson declared August as Kansas Farmers Market Month, and this week as Kansas Farmers Market Week.

In proclamations, Parkinson said the markets are good for farmers and the economy.

“By selling directly to the consumer, farmers can realize a higher return for their products than if they were working through a wholesale market,” the governor’s proclamation said.

The Downtown Lawrence Farmers’ Market is open from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday in the 800 block of New Hampshire Street, and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday in the 1000 block of Vermont Street.

Svaty also urged Kansans to try seasonal produce. He said vendors can provide suggestions on how to prepare it, or seasonal recipes are available online at ksfarmersmarkets.com.

While off topic slightly, I would say the same thing about local restaurants. I find it comical that someone in Kansas would go to "On the Border" when there are tons of Mexican restaurants with owners serving the real deal. I say the same thing about the Outback or Famous Dave's. This is the flipping heartland. We know how to make a streak or smoke some barbecue. Find a locally owned place with their own product.

For example, in Kansas City, why would you go to the Outback (other then being cheap) when you could go to Jess and Jim's? Why would you go to Famous Dave and when you go about a dozen well known places in KC.

Of course, I am from Topeka. Famous Dave's is opening up a spot on Franchise road (Wanamaker Drive) My home town likes franchise food so much that when it opens it will be on the firont page of the Capital Jorunal and they will probably have stupid parade or something down Wanamaker.....
