Body found in Basehor determined to be suicide

The cause of death for a man whose body was found Sunday afternoon in Basehor has been determined to be suicide.

According to Basehor Police Chief Lloyd Martley, a father and his sons noticed a strange smell while visiting a pond about 3:30 p.m. Sunday just north of State Avenue on 150th Street. After following the smell, they discovered the body and called the police.

The body was hidden in a heavily wooded area that was not visible from the road, Martley said, and he estimates it had been there three to six months. A coroner has determined it may have been as little as a month, depending on the weather.

“At this point the only thing we know about it is it appears to be a male; unknown age or race,” Martley said.

The only other information police know about the man at this time is that he was about 5 feet 4 inches tall. His identity is still under investigation.
