KU’s Spencer has the ‘time’

This fall’s theme of time will march on in a new way starting today at the Spencer Museum of Art at Kansas University.

“About Time,” an exhibition of five clocks made by KU alumnus and Emporia native Wendell Castle, opens for a three-month showing at the museum.

Castle, who now lives in New York, incorporates concepts of time into his clock pieces, which are made of a variety of materials, including wood, brass, fiberglass and aluminum.

It joins “Time/Frame,” an exhibition that features works by various artists who have incorporated concepts of time into their works, which already is open at the Spencer.

Several events tied to the Castle are scheduled for this fall:

¢ A children’s art appreciation class discussing the works that will allow children ages 5 to 14 use found objects to build their own clocks will be at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Sept. 27. To enroll, call Jessica Johnson at 864-0137.

¢ An opening reception is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 2, with Castle giving a lecture in the museum’s auditorium at 7 p.m. that day.

¢ A Town and Gown Forum featuring KU faculty members discussing both “About Time” and “Time/Frame” at 10 a.m. Oct. 10.

¢ Student Night, with free food, music and activities from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 30.
