LHS band uniforms to be replaced

Lawrence High School band members, prepare your overture.

Long-awaited new band uniforms and other equipment upgrades are on the docket, following the Lawrence school board’s approval of a measure denoting a budget line item for athletic and fine arts equipment.

Most likely beginning next year, the district will commit $125,000 to replace, renew or upgrade equipment that students use on a daily basis. The first items to be replaced are Lawrence High’s band uniforms, which will cost the district $106,000.

“This is a recognition of reality that is greatly appreciated by everybody who is around,” said school board Vice President Scott Morgan. “Too often we act like … we don’t have to maintain (equipment), but we do.”

The school board also agreed to renew a four-year agreement with Royal Crest Lanes for a high school bowling program.

The program allows 26 students per high school to participate for free, while awarding scholarships.

The board voted to approve $8,820 to pay for bowling coaches.

“This is one of the few sports where you’ll see (students) cheering for each other,” said Rick Gammill, director of special operations.
