Pedestrian injured in Friday night accident dies

Martin J. Howard was struck by a motorcycle while walking near the intersection of Iowa Street and Clinton Parkway

Martin Howard, the Virginia Beach, Va., man struck by a motorcycle Friday night while walking across Iowa Street, died Saturday night of his injuries, a family member said.

Howard, 56, was visiting Lawrence on business, his brother Dan Howard said Sunday in a phone call from Walworth, N.Y. Martin Howard worked with an agency that contracted with the federal government, assessing buildings and projects, his brother said. He traveled for his work and had planned to be in Lawrence for one day.

Prior to the accident, Howard had spoken on the phone with a loved one and said he was going to go out for a walk, Dan Howard said.

The accident occurred near the intersection of 23rd and Iowa streets. According to Lawrence police Sgt. Mark Warren, Howard was walking from east to west across Iowa Street near Chili’s Grill and Bar, 2319 Iowa, when he was struck by a 1996 Yamaha 600 driven by Eryn Kendle, 19, Eudora. Kendle was driving south on Iowa Street. Warren said there was no indication that alcohol was a factor in the accident. Kendle had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Dan Howard said his brother suffered significant head trauma from the accident. He died Saturday night at Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., where he had been taken by helicopter ambulance.

Martin Howard had a wife, three daughters, and numerous grandchildren. He was one of seven children and had a large extended family, Dan Howard said.

“He always made everybody laugh,” Dan Howard said. “He was very quick-witted. He loved his family, and his family loved him.”
