One lucky family in Chapman may have a new home in a matter of weeks – and many other lucky people will have an opportunity to show their community spirit in helping to build it.

The ABC show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” has already been scouting in the Chapman area and has narrowed its search to five families whose homes were destroyed in the June 11 tornado, Chapman City Attorney Doug Thompson said.

“It’s a done deal that it’s going to happen,” Thompson said Friday afternoon, confirming that it wasn’t an issue of whether one of the families would be chosen but which one. “It’s going to happen and very quickly,” he said.

The show, which relies heavily on local volunteers, chronicles the building of a new home in less than a week. Thompson said the plan is to have the home built before the end of the year.

“They’ve done 133 homes, to date,” he said. “In each of the ones I’ve seen, they’ve really made a difference – I’ve been impressed with how communities have come together.”

The Sunday-night show is regularly one of the top-rated and averages about 17 million viewers.

Exactly who is being chosen for the new home project will be a closely guarded secret, Thompson said. “The community won’t know until they drive up” to begin work.

Thompson said the city will have a role in the project, in terms of expediting the usual building permitting and inspection process, to fit the usual 106-hour construction time for such projects.

“We’ll also probably have to provide security,” he said. “There may be more people here to watch this than there were here after the tornado.”

Thompson said additional information about volunteer needs would be made public soon, and he urged skilled people to consider volunteering – even for a short period of time.

Thompson said much of the volunteer labor would be coordinated through area churches.
