Carbondale ? A week after being held out due to a blow to his head, Jeremy Carlisle dove head-first back into action for Tonganoxie High at Santa Fe Trail on Friday night.

The Chieftains’ sophomore running back and safety did so literally in the second overtime of the Kaw Valley League football clash, sweeping to the right and going airborne into the end zone to score what proved to be the game-winning touchdown for THS in a 28-21 thriller.

The victory wasn’t certain until Carlisle picked off a Phoenix Anshutz pass on the second play of the Chargers’ possession in the second overtime, spoiling the Chargers’ homecoming game. But when he secured the game-clinching interception, the THS sideline – including coach Mark Elston, who gave a Tiger Woods-esque fist pump – went wild as Tonganoxie picked up its first KVL victory of the season.

“It’s awesome,” Elston said. “We had our chances to put them away and, being a young team, we thought we had it there in the first quarter, and, obviously, teams aren’t going to give up.”

Indeed, the Chieftains (4-1, 1-1) looked to be on their way to routing SFT (0-5, 0-3) in the first quarter after Carlisle scored on a six-yard run for his first of three touchdowns, and the quarter ended with THS senior quarterback Zack Robinson hitting D.J. Lindsay in stride down the right sideline for a 65-yard touchdown pass.

Unfazed, the Chargers scored 21 unanswered points to take the lead. Anshutz found Jesse Bahner for a 22-yard score in the second quarter, and Chase McIver and Caleb Cook each had a rushing touchdown in the third.

Said Chargers coach Lucas Boss: “These kids, the way they go at it is the way I want this program to be. We’ve just got to transform it into wins on a Friday night.”

Tonganoxie trailed for all of 14 seconds, though, because following Cook’s score, Carlisle returned the Chargers’ kickoff 83 yards. Following a Robinson extra point, the game was tied at 21.

Both teams were unable to score in the fourth quarter.

The Chargers had their way with THS most of the second half, thanks in large part to Cook, who rushed for 132 yards in the second half alone and finished with 150 on the ground.

De Soto 20, Paola 14

Paola – It took five weeks, but De Soto finally got its first victory of the year.

Clinton Davis’ one-yard run late in the third quarter gave De Soto the lead it would not relinquish, and Dylan Burford’s interception with 1:37 left in the fourth quarter sealed De Soto’s victory.

De Soto’s defense kept Paola from scoring on two trips into the red zone in the third quarter and contained Paola running back Skylar Hawkins in the second half. While Paola’s offense struggled against De Soto’s defensive attack, the Wildcats’ (1-4) offense mixed in the run and the pass all night.

Mark England had 12 carries for 72 yards rushing, and quarterback Logan Clark was 8-of-18 passing for 135 yards. He also threw a 63-yard touchdown strike to Burford.

Baldwin 35, Ottawa 7

Ottawa – Baldwin negated four first-half turnovers on offense by coming up with four turnovers on defense, and the Bulldogs cruised past Ottawa.

Baldwin cornerback Andy Thurlow intercepted two Ottawa passes. He also caught a touchdown pass from Sam Beecher in the third quarter to extend the lead to 28 points.

“Our defense really got the ball back for us after our turnovers,” Baldwin coach Mike Berg said. “It was pretty ugly.”

Baldwin improved to 4-1 and will entertain Louisburg next week. Ottawa dropped to 0-5.

Louisburg 42, Eudora 21

Louisburg – Eudora had two players rush for more than 100 yards, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Louisburg’s offensive assault.

Ryan Fisher led the Cardinals with 155 yards rushing and one touchdown on 24 carries. Evan Cleveland contributed two scores on 110 yards and 13 carries.

Eudora fell to 2-3 and travels to Gardner next week.

Doniphan West 52, McLouth 10

Highland – Doniphan West hammered McLouth, outgaining the Bulldogs 338 yards to 98.

Mill Valley 36, Turner 31

Shawnee – Nicholas Woods was a workhorse for Mill Valley, carrying 36 times for 256 yards and four touchdowns. Woods also caught an eight-yard score from QB Macauley Garton.

Mill Valley (4-1) will travel to Atchison next week.

Wathena 21, Oskaloosa 14

Wathena – Oskaloosa held a slim halftime lead before succumbing to Wathena in the third quarter.

Lansing 36, Perry-Lecompton 28

Lansing – Perry-Lecompton quarterback Shane Gimzo threw three touchdown passes in a losing effort against undefeated Lansing (5-0). Gimzo completed nine of 27 pass attempts for 174 yards. He also ran 15 times for 151 yards and a score.

Eric Hastert caught three of Gimzo’s passes for 94 yards, and Joel Gantz hauled in four catches for 74 yards.

P-L improved to 3-2.

Osawatomie 14, Wellsville 13

Wellsville – Austin Moore accounted for both of Wellsville’s touchdowns, with scoring runs of three and 11 yards, but the Eagles (1-4) came up a point short.
