Help available for those who want to quit smoking

With cash tight for most Americans, one way to save money might be to stop smoking.

Resources are available for those who want to quit. Among them:

• Lawrence Memorial Hospital is offering a free one-session class that covers the steps to successfully quit smoking.

The class will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Meeting Room A at the hospital, 325 Maine. Topics will include pharmaceuticals, how to prevent weight gain and ways to deal with stress.

• Aynsley Anderson, a certified smoking cessation educator with LMH, will be taking questions during an online chat at 10 a.m. Thursday. Submit questions early at LJWorld.com.

• Kansas University’s Student Health Services is offering a free six-week program for students. It includes individual coaching and resource materials. To learn more, contact Ken Sarber at 864-9573.

• The Kansas Tobacco Quitline is (866) KAN-STOP or (866) 526-7867 and available 24 hours per day, seven days a week. American Cancer Society coaches will provide support and help develop a plan for each caller to quit.
