For the 10th year, Helen Harrell will help place American flags at Clinton Cemetery to honor veterans on Memorial Day.

“It’s an awesome sight to see,” she said.

Harrell and several other volunteers will place 37 flags along the cemetery’s avenue entrance Monday.

“Our goal is to one day have a flag for every veteran,” she said of the 130 veterans buried there.

Each flag that is either donated or purchased after a military burial service has a plastic sleeve on the handle that includes the veteran’s name, rank and service dates.

“I think it’s so important because of our veterans, what they have been through,” Harrell said of continuing the cemetery’s tradition. “I think sometimes we forget to remember.”

The Avenue of Flags will be displayed from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday at the cemetery, 247 N. 1250 Road, Berryton. American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 of Lawrence will dedicate the flags during an 11:30 a.m. service.

Saturday

¢ At 9 a.m. the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and members of the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will honor Union soldiers who served in the Civil War at Oak Hill and Maple Grove cemeteries, both at 16th Street and Oak Hill Avenue, and Pioneer Cemetery on Kansas University’s West Campus near Irving Hill Road and Stewart Drive, by placing flags on the graves of each soldier. ¢ The Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Ky., will open for the season. Its hours are 1 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. daily.
