People interested in how land along the Farmers Turnpike will develop will have an opportunity to speak out this week.

City leaders will host a public meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at the Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, to review the proposed K-10 and Farmers Turnpike Land Use Plan.

The plan calls for a major new industrial area near the Lecompton interchange on the Kansas Turnpike. The plan also calls for “auto-related commercial” development near the intersection, although the plan specifically says the commercial development should not be a major truck stop. The plan also proposes high-density apartment development near Kasold Drive and the Farmers Turnpike. That intersection also would house a new community commercial retail center.

City leaders are seeking comment on the plan, which is available for review at www.lawrenceplanning.org. Ultimately, the plan must be approved by the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission and the City Commission.
