KU wins baseball shootout with Oklahoma

Jayhawks upend Sooners, 17-15

Kansas University’s baseball team overcame a six-run deficit to claw back and beat Oklahoma, 17-15, in a wild Big 12 Conference game Friday at Hoglund Ballpark.

Kansas (27-22 overall, 6-13 Big 12 play) pounded 16 hits, and scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take back the game. A two-run, two-out single by Buck Afenir proved to be the winning hit.

Oklahoma (29-18, 6-12) scored four in the fourth and seven in the fifth but couldn’t hold on.

KU’s freshmen came through on Friday, with Jimmy Waters going 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs, and Tony Thompson going 3-for-3 with a home run and three driven in.

The cold weather and a strong wind blowing out made it tough on the pitchers. Nine pitchers combined to throw 369 pitches and give up 32 runs.

Kansas and Oklahoma will meet in the middle game of the series at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark.
