On the court, it might be Maya vs. Candace.

That storyline could become reality in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament if traditional powers Tennessee and Connecticut collide in the national championship game April 8 in Tampa, Fla.

The two powerhouses were put on a path for that potential showdown Monday, when the tournament’s 64-team draw was announced.

Connecticut received the overall No. 1 seed. Tennessee also was a top regional seed, along with North Carolina (30-2) and Maryland.

The annual regular-season showdown between Tennessee and UConn was canceled last summer by Vols coach Pat Summitt, reportedly because of her displeasure over Uconn’s recruiting of Maya Moore.

The freshman from Georgia has led UConn to a 32-1 record, making her one of the biggest stories of the season. Another is Tennessee junior Candace Parker, who is headed to the WNBA after the tournament and is expected to be the professional league’s No. 1 draft pick.

The Vols (30-2) are the top seeds in the Oklahoma City Regional. The Huskies are No. 1 in the Greensboro, N.C., Regional, which includes an old friend from the Big East.
