BU freshman hangs 38 on Tech

Pullen leads 'Cats to 73-69 win over Iowa State

Baylor's LaceDarius Dunn elevates for a shot against Texas Tech. Dunn scored a career-high 38 points in Baylor's 86-73 victory against Texas Tech on Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.

? LaceDarius Dunn knew he was in the zone Saturday.

The Baylor freshman scored a career-high 38 points, including six three-pointers, to lead the Bears past Texas Tech, 86-73.

“Every time I shot, (the basket) was just spreading open to me, and I knew 95 percent of the time it was going in so I wasn’t really worried about the shots,” he said. “It felt very good.”

Dunn’s points are the most ever by a Bears freshman and the most for a Baylor player since 1988, when Darryl Middleton scored 38 against Rice.

Baylor sank eight three-pointers on 19 attempts, led by Dunn going 6-of-9 from behind the arc.

Dunn’s previous career high was 27 points against Brown in January, when he hit seven three-pointers.

“I wish he could have told me before the game he was going to do that and I could have relaxed the whole time,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said.

Martin Zeno scored 27, and John Roberson added 25 to lead Tech (16-14, 7-9).

The Bears (21-9, 9-7 Big 12) trailed by one at halftime but started taking control with a 16-6 run in the first six minutes of the second half for a 52-43 lead. Dunn was 4-of-4 on three-pointers during the run.

The quick seven points were part of a 10-2 run that put the Bears ahead 66-54 with 8:12 remaining.

Tweety Carter scored 16 points, and Rogers added 10 for the Bears.

Alan Voskuil, who came into the game leading the conference in three-pointers and averaging 13.3 points, didn’t score a point for the Red Raiders.

“They just had a guy stay on him,” Tech coach Pat Knight said. “Voskuil just looked flat tonight.”

Kansas State 73, Iowa State 69

Ames, Iowa – Jacob Pullen scored 19 points, one shy of his career high, and Kansas State snapped a five-game road losing streak by holding off Iowa State.

Freshman star Michael Beasley battled through foul trouble and scored 15 points – his lowest output in conference play – for the Wildcats (20-10, 10-6 Big 12), who will be the No. 3 seed in next week’s Big 12 tournament.

Craig Brackins scored a game-high 24 points to lead Iowa State (14-17, 4-12), which finished the regular season by losing 11 of its last 13 games.

Beasley struggled early, missing five of his first six shots. He warmed up midway through the first half, following up a three-point play with two quick jumpers to put the Wildcats ahead 33-26. Pullen drilled two threes late in the first half to push Kansas State’s lead to 42-33 by halftime.

The Wildcats went 8-of-26 from three-point range after attempting just 15 threes in a victory over Colorado on Tuesday.

Oklahoma 75, Missouri 66

Norman, Okla. – Austin Johnson scored 18 points, and Blake Griffin added 14 points and eight rebounds while making another early return from an injury.

Oklahoma (21-10, 9-7 Big 12) needed the victory to seal the No. 4 seed in next week’s Big 12 Tournament and finish above .500 in conference play, an important mark considering that no team has made the NCAA tournament with eight Big 12 losses.

The Sooners earned the first-round tournament bye with a three-game winning streak to finish the season, edging out Baylor with a tiebreaker decided by Oklahoma’s season sweep of the Bears. Before the closing surge, the Sooners’ NCAA Tournament hopes appeared in jeopardy after back-to-back losses in which they scored only 45 points each game.

Leo Lyons and Carroll scored 18 points apiece to lead Missouri, which was outrebounded 20-10 in the second half after controlling the boards early.
