Garden tour features artists, food, plant specials

The First Annual Tours Des Fleurs started this morning as wristband wearers began their trek around the area’s plant havens.

“We have had six cars here at one time so far,” Marcia Henry of The Henrys’ Plant Farm in Lecompton said around 9:30 a.m. “They are shopping and they are walking though our display gardens and everyone seems to be happy.”

The tour runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The event is free, but participants can purchase a $5 wristband and receive special deals at garden stops along the tour.

The stops include Earth Flowers, Pendleton’s Country Market, Clinton Parkway Nursery, Hamill’s Country Garden Nursery, The Henrys’ Plant Farm, and Sunrise Garden Center.

Each stop offers different activities and specials. At The Henrys’ Plant Farm, there are self-guided tours of display gardens and local artists are showing their works. The Water’s Edge will host a Lotus Party from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today and participants will sample lotus and other edible aquatic treats.

Henry said organizers started the event as a new, unique take on the traditional garden show.
