The Stull Busy Beavers 4-H club has participated in several activities. In December, members collected food items for a local food pantry. In February, members made homemade Valentines for local nursing homes. In April, the meeting was run by junior officers: Kelsey Wulfkuhle, junior president; Landon Jamison Jr., vice president; and Taylor Springer, secretary. Also in April, the club attended Corpus Christi Church for 4-H Sunday. The educational tour committee gave a presentation on fire safety and the Kanawaka Fire Department brought out a fire truck. The club’s annual ice cream social will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 28 at Stull United Methodist Church.

The Douglas County Spring Sheep Show was June 7 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Joe LaRue offered tips on how to improve showmanship skills as he judged the show. Rocky Swearingen, Douglas County sheep leader, gave a show lamb camp for beginning sheep project members to learn how to wash, shear, fit and show their lambs. Eighteen youths participated in the camp. Helpers for the camp were Pete Wempe, Kristy Wempe, Connor Nottingham, Luke Wempe, Hillary Saathoff and Simon Fangman.

In the afternoon show, LaRue selected a Wether Dam shown by Micala Holthaus, Marysville, as the Grand Champion Ewe. Holly Swearingen, Lawrence, had her Hampshire ewe selected for Reserve Grand Champion Ewe. The other ewe breed champion was a Champion Suffolk, shown by Jordahn Cretsinger, Edgerton.

The Prospect Market Lamb Show had 68 entries. Afton Gnadt, Alma, had her 115-pound Suffolk chosen as Grand Champion Prospect Market Lamb. Lance Davis, Yates Center, had his 114-pound Hampshire lamb chosen for Reserve Champion Prospect Market Lamb. Other breed champions were Dorset – Justin Rossillon, Yates Center; Natural – Emma Stewart, Baldwin City; and Crossbred – Lance Davis, Yates Center.

Simon Fangman, Lawrence, was selected champion of the Senior Showmanship class, and Hilary Saathoff, Tonganoxie, was reserve. The Intermediate Showmanship class was won by Cade Hibdon, Princeton; and Emma Stewart, Baldwin City, won reserve. Rayann Johnson, Alma, earned the champion Junior Showmanship award, and Holly Swearingen, Lawrence, was reserve.

The Douglas County Family and Community Education Council met June 2 in the Deal Six Auditorium at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Judy Wulfkuhle, president, announced Mary Lee Brown received a 50-year member award, and Mary Ann Strong and Ann Haley each received 25-year awards at District Days in Wyandotte County.

Susan Krumm, extension agent in family and consumer sciences with K-State Research and Extension-Douglas County, announced there will be an extension booth at Lawrence Memorial Health Fair on Sept. 20. The educational theme will be “Healthy Choices When Eating Out.” Aliene Bieber and Darlene Bright will be in charge of the booth. Krumm also reported that the fair book will be online at www.dgcountyfair.com. The fair information number is 785-841-6322.

The council voted to send $25 to the Viata Program to sponsor a Romanian boy’s attendance to a camp in Romania.

Esther Smith, vice president, announced FCE members have donated several hundred books to the Perry-Lecompton Library.

Darlene Bright announced the next Red Cross blood drive will be July 31 at First Christian Church; the 59ers FCE unit will donate the cookies.

The next FCE Council meeting will be Sept. 8.
