A Lawrence couple is hoping to become the first same-sex couple from Kansas to get married legally in California.

Mike Silverman, 35, and Dave Greenbaum, 37, plan on getting their marriage license at 8:15 a.m. June 17 in San Francisco. A recent California Supreme Court ruling legalized gay marriage.

The two have been together for more than 12 years, and said they plan to wear Kansas University attire.

“We wanted to show that we are proud to be from Kansas, and we hope that our home state one day soon will live up to its founding values and recognize marriage for all its citizens,” said Silverman.

The couple had a Jewish ceremony nine years ago recognizing their relationship. They said they wanted to get married in California to provide legal protections for their relationship and make a statement in favor of equality in Kansas.

In 2005, Kansas voters approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. But Silverman and Greenbaum said Kansas should recognize the California marriage license because of the U.S. Constitution’s “full faith and credit clause” which requires states to recognize other state’s actions.
