US prepares to deport Vietnamese nationals

? The United States signed an agreement with the Vietnamese government in Hanoi, allowing the U.S. to deport some Vietnamese nationals back to their home country, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Tuesday.

Under the memorandum of agreement, Vietnamese nationals who arrived in the U.S. on or after July 12, 1995, are subject to return to Vietnam.

About 6,400 Vietnamese nationals living in the United States have been given final deportation orders and about 1,500 will be immediately impacted by this agreement, according to ICE.

It may include people who came here legally but overstayed their visa, or were legal permanent residents who committed crimes that rendered them removable, according to ICE spokesperson Virginia Kice.

The deal between the United States and Vietnam had been in negotiations for 10 years, according to ICE. Vietnam had been reluctant to accept citizens back, according to an Associated Press story.
