Guidelines for crossing guards examined

Lawrence City Commission

Bottom line

City commissioners will consider changing the policy that guides them in determining what locations are eligible for a school crossing guard.

Background

The Traffic Safety Commission is asking city commissioners to change the policy to better allow for speed limits, number of lanes of traffic and sight distance. The new policy would allow for a crossing guard if the speed limit is more than 35 mph, the street has more than three lanes of traffic or the sight distance is not sufficient for an elementary student to cross the street.
