Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 11, 1908: “Probably not many people are aware of the fact that Dr. Lucy Taylor of this city was the first woman dentist in the world, not just the United States. That is a fact. Mrs. Taylor, then Lucy Hobbs, was admitted to practice in 1866, being in that year graduated from the Ohio Dental College which, prior to her admission, had confined its student body to the male sex. Mrs. Taylor has now been practicing for 42 years and is a testimony to how a determined, able woman can achieve so many great things in her lifetime. : The funeral and burial here for Urbin Angney, university football player who was due to become team captain this fall, will be tomorrow. He killed himself recently by leaping 85 feet from the top of Fraser Hall. There has been little development in finding out precisely why he acted as he did, but he leaves many grieving family, friends and teammates.”
