Veritas girls tumble at state

? A scoreless second quarter and five-point fourth doomed Veritas Christian School to a 48-31 loss to Wichita Christian on Friday in the semifinals of the KCAA state girls basketball tournament.

“We just hit a wall,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said. “We had a 13-8 lead in the first quarter, but they had a 19-0 run in the second quarter. We had open shots. We just didn’t hit them. They are a big, physical team, and when the game became as physical as it did in the second quarter, we just couldn’t compete at that level. We’re disappointed, but we’ve got to move on.”

Kristie Tiegreen led Veritas with 11 points, with five rebounds and four steals. Meaghan Holmes had seven points, six rebounds and four blocks.

Veritas (16-7) will face Topeka Cair Paravel for third place today.
