From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 2, 1908: “Blanche Owens, a woman whose name was linked to a criminal case here, has sued The Daily World for $25,000, saying the mention damaged her reputation. Ed Riling is her lawyer and is also representing a man charged with murder in the case in question. : The number of boys in local schools has been increasing the past several years and officials think the manual training course added in 1906 is a big factor. There have been noticeable gains in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades for boys. : Fire practically destroyed the Rock Island rail depot in Topeka last night. Loss is estimated at more than $100,000 and it appears faulty wiring caused it.”
