Local youths’ work featured in calendar

Karen Schneck, 13, and Jasmine Olson, 12, both of Lawrence, are two of the winners in a national contest that promotes environmental awareness and thrift among children. Karen and Jasmine are both members of KU Credit Union’s Johnny Appleseed Junior Ecology Club, a nationwide program sponsored by financial institutions interested in helping young people learn more about ecology and money management.

For this year’s contest, members of the KU Credit Union’s club drew pictures of ways to save or protect our country’s resources. More than 500 KUCU members in the club received entry forms. Karen’s drawing suggested using old jeans to make jean purses and quilts. Jasmine’s drawing featured a picture of a milk jug that had been transformed into a bird house. Their drawings will be featured in the 2009 Johnny Appleseed Club calendar.
