Parents: Heed teens’ advice when shopping

Toothpaste, socks unpopular gifts

Have you finished shopping for your holiday gifts? If not, some Lawrence sixth-graders have a few tips for teen presents.

The students in Mr. Hegeman’s class at Langston Hughes School said in an interview that all of the sixth graders would rather have store-bought gifts rather than homemade gifts.

And if you’re trying to find something for your amazing boyfriend, don’t go down the clothing aisle or get anything that could be considered girlie. Although most boys don’t want clothing, Shane Hofer has gotten something worse.

“The worst gift I’ve ever gotten was in my stocking. It was toothpaste,” said Shane, a student in Mr. Hegeman’s class.

All of the students agreed that socks and underwear are definitely a big no-no when it comes to holiday gifts. Of course, Cooper Karlin thinks coal would be pretty bad too!

Mom and Dad, most kids’ favorite gifts come from you, so don’t let them down. But if you do get your son some new Snoopy socks, don’t expect him to wear them because most students say when they get a gift they don’t like they store it in the back of a closet or give it to a sibling. Maybe you could try giving your daughter clothing or money, and your son would love some new video games!

Six out of 12 of the students interviewed don’t know what they are going to get. Nikita Imafidon says, “No, I don’t know. My parents have a strict no-peeking policy.”

Adriana Jadlow says, “I know, but only if I shake the box!” But she says her parents know what to get her because of the holiday gift list most students make.

According to these students, the best gift you could go for with guys or girls is an iPod. So go out there and start buying, but please, avoid the socks and underwear!
