Office Depot to keep city’s store running

Decision to close 112 stores nationwide to affect Overland Park, not Lawrence

Office Depot Inc.’s plan to close 112 retail stores in the next three months does not include the Lawrence store at 2525 Iowa, a company spokeswoman said Thursday.

An Overland Park store will be the only one affected in Kansas, said Mindy Kramer, a public relations director for Office Depot’s corporate office in Boca Raton, Fla. In the central United States, 45 stores will close.

Office Depot, a retail office product and service provider, will reduce its stores in North America to 1,163.

Kramer said the decision was based on several factors, including sales and profit, the condition of the store’s shopping plaza, demographics in the area and store traffic.

“Each store is evaluated on its own,” she said.

About 14 additional stores are expected to be closed in 2009 as their leases expire, but those sites have not been determined yet, Kramer said.

About 20 people work at each of the stores targeted for closure. Those employees can apply for open positions within the company. Any who do not get placed will receive severance and assistance, Kramer said.

Office Depot plans to close six of its 33 distribution facilities in North America, and the company will only open about 20 new stores in 2009, down from an earlier estimate of 40 new stores.
