Fort Hays State University announces area students who received scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Lawrence:

Lindsey Bierig, a 2008 Free State High School graduate, accepted a $500 Copper Academic Award. She is the daughter of Teresa Marshall and Jon Bierig.

Ashley Caldwell, a 2008 Lawrence High School graduate, accepted a $500 Award of Excellence in art. She is the daughter of Richard and Cindy Caldwell.

Olivia Ewert, a 2008 Lawrence High School graduate, accepted a $500 Award of Excellence in art. She is the daughter of Anthony and Rebecca Ewert.

Cody Fotovich, a 2008 Lawrence Free State High School graduate, accepted a $500 Award of Excellence in art. He is the son of Christina and Joseph Fotovich.

Jessica Hall, a 2008 Lawrence High School graduate, accepted a $500 Award of Excellence in fine arts. She is the daughter of Jerry and Roxanne Hall.

Courtney Knight, a 2008 Lawrence High School graduate, accepted a $500 Award of Excellence in art. She is the daughter of Lance and Roberta Endacott.

Kim McDonald, a 2008 Lawrence High School graduate, accepted a $500 Award of Excellence in art. She is the daughter of Greg and Julie McDonald.

Amanda Puentes, a 2008 Lawrence Free State High School graduate, accepted a $500 Copper Academic Award and a $500 Award of Excellence in art. She is the daughter of Reynaldo and Cheryl Puentes.

McLouth:

Alexandria Piatt, a 2008 Free State High School graduate, accepted a $1,200 Miller Black and Gold Academic Award. She is the daughter of Angela Moulin, McLouth.

Grant Smelser, a 2008 McLouth High School graduate, accepted a $1,200 Miller Black and Gold Academic Award. He is the son of Allen and Nancy Smelser.

¢ Amy Mowery, Lawrence, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history on May 10 from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. The ceremony was at Yager Stadium.

¢ Erin Thimmesch received the $5,000 Dinah Shore Scholarship, which is awarded to a female high school senior who has demonstrated academic achievement while participating in golf during high school. Given annually by The Ladies Professional Golf Association Foundation since 1994, the scholarship is named in honor of the late entertainer and honorary member of the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame, Dinah Shore.

Thimmesch is a 2008 graduate of Lawrence High School and the daughter of Dan and Sara Thimmesch, Lawrence.

She will attend Washington University, St. Louis, this fall, where she intends to major in pre-medicine.

¢ Nicholas Burkart, Lawrence, was awarded the $1,400 Portia Goke Scholarship for the 2008-09 academic school year at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. He is a sophomore and majoring in professional golf management.

¢ Kansas University’s School of Education honored 797 teachers from 173 school districts statewide with certificates recognizing 25 years or more of service to education in Kansas.

¢ Rebecca and Blake Peterson, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Ryan Blake Peterson, born July 12, 2008, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Ryan has two sisters, Karenna, 7, and Callia, 4.

His maternal grandparents are Carolyn Moore, Boise, Idaho; and David Moore, Salt Lake City. His paternal grandparents are Linda Peterson St. Pierre, Clio, Calif.; and Robert Peterson, Reno, Nev. His great-grandparent is Elizabeth Moore, Salt Lake City.
