It may have been the shortest school board meeting on record.

Lawrence school board members concluded Monday’s meeting in a brisk 10 minutes, approving the only two action items on the agenda: Two contracts to provide upgrades to several elementary schools.

Lawrence-based Mar Lan Construction won a bid to install a wheelchair ramp and entrance at the main entrance of Cordley School.

“We’ve tried to get that school accessible,” said Craig Grant, school board president.

Superintendent Randy Weseman said the federal Office of Civil Rights found several instances where district was in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, prompting the district to award Mar Lan Construction with a contract for more than $80,000. A wheelchair entrance already exists at the school, but not at the main entrance.

“We’re held to a higher standard with these ADA compliances than the private sector,” Weseman said. The construction will begin soon.

The board also approved a $10,000 project to improve telecommunication and electrical wiring at four elementary schools. The project is being completed by an existing contractor, Savage Communications.

The four schools receiving the upgrades are New York, Sunset Hill, Woodlawn and Wakarusa Valley.

Grant told the school board he was pleased that the district and Lawrence teachers came to a tentative agreement for a contract last week. Grant sat on the district’s negotiating team. He said the board will vote to approve the contract Sept. 22.

“It helps them get on to what they want to do, which is teach,” said board member Scott Morgan.

Weseman met earlier Monday with the school board for his annual performance evaluation, and board members gave him a satisfactory report.

“Obviously, we felt good about the situation with our superintendent. We think he’s done a good job,” Grant said. The board will meet with Weseman in subsequent weeks to identify goals for the school year.
