Sixth Street repaving set to last two weeks

Drivers will face delays during the next two weeks along a stretch of Sixth Street in northwest Lawrence, as crews work to remove deteriorating pavement and replace it with a smooth surface.

Crews are scheduled to start work Monday on Sixth Street, from Monterey Way to Eldridge Street.

The project will replace the surface for the two lanes serving eastbound traffic; existing pavement for westbound traffic will remain.

Removing the damaged pavement will force intermittent closures of one lane at a time. Actual repaving – expected either late next week or early the week of Aug. 25 – will close both eastbound lanes, squeezing traffic into one lane going each direction.

Access to Hy-Vee from Sixth Street will be open for traffic heading west. Drivers going east on Sixth will need to head north on Monterey Way to gain access to the shopping center.
