Airport Business Park plans to be examined

Plans for a major industrial park near the Lawrence Municipal Airport may soon get its day of judgment before city commissioners.

Commissioners tentatively agreed to place plans for the Airport Business Park on their May 27 agenda.

The business park proposal has been strongly opposed by neighbors in the area, saying the flat, flood-prone farmland is inappropriate for a business park. Developers, however, have argued that the site’s location near the Kansas Turnpike makes it a prime site to attract new businesses to the community.

The project has remained in limbo while city commissioners consider the neighbors’ concerns, and also wrestle with how to fund several million dollars in infrastructure improvements that would need to be made to the area.
