Talks put focus on Beijing Olympics

The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will be the focus of a symposium at Kansas University’s Hall Center for the Humanities this week.

The symposium, “Olympian Desires: Building Bodies and Nations in East Asia,” is an international, interdisciplinary symposium, presented by the university’s Center for East Asian Studies.

The conference will kick off with a lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Regnier Hall Auditorium, 12610 Quivira Road, on the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park.

Andrew Morris, of the California Polytechnic State University, will give the lecture “Why Are They So Far Ahead of Us?: The National Body, National Anxiety and the Olympics in China.”

On Friday and Saturday, programs will be at the Hall Center for the Humanities, 900 Sunnyside Ave. on KU’s main Lawrence campus. Twelve speakers will discuss the political, social, economic and cultural impacts of the Olympics on East Asian host nations: Japan, South Korea and China.
