Jayhawks get weekend off

Kansas University’s basketball players, who successfully completed Week One of Boot Camp conditioning drills, are on furlough until Monday.

“Everybody got through it and met their requirements. Next week, we’ll have a couple of days a bit tougher,” KU basketball coach Bill Self said Friday. “I’ll say this : if they could get through Wednesday, which they did, they can get through anything.”

Self indicated Wednesday’s 6 to 7 a.m. Boot Camp session involved a lot of running.

“I made it really hard on them,” Self said. “They got through it great. I totally anticipate them doing even better next week.

“They’re all doing well,” he said of the 17 participants. “We’ll pass off giving grades until after the second week. We’ll meet again Monday and get after it.”

Self did indicate freshmen scholarship players Tyrel Reed and Cole Aldrich were pleasant surprises.

“Their conditioning is a lot better than I thought it’d be,” Self said. “Tyrel is a well conditioned athlete. I thought Cole would labor more. It’s so new to them. They’ve both done well.”

Junior Brandon Rush, who had right ACL surgery on June 1, “is doing about 50 to 70 percent of Boot Camp drills,” Self said. “He’s participating every day. There are still certain things he’s not cleared to do.”

Self said the target date for Rush’s return to game action is Dec. 1, though it still “could be earlier or could be later.”

Morning Boot Camp conditioning drills involve defensive slides, backboard touches and dozens of 22s (up and down the court twice, touching the end lines).

Monroe, 6-foot-10 from Cox High in Harvey, La., had KU, Baylor and USC on his original list of eight. He will visit LSU next weekend and Georgetown for Midnight Madness on Oct. 12.

¢ Thomas is here: Quintrell Thomas, a 6-8, 225-pound senior power forward from St. Patrick High in Elizabeth, N.J., arrived in Lawrence on Friday for his weekend visit. He’ll return to the East Coast on Sunday morning.
