Old Home town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 24, 1907: “The fire department made two runs yesterday afternoon, one to a roof fire at the H.V. Stunz residence at 1716 Louisiana and the other to 1230 Mississippi after weeds in a yard had caught fire. The loss in the roof fire was listed at about $1,000. : The sheriff raided a joint run by Anderson Bell this morning and Bell is now in the county jail. The officers got three full cases of beer which Bell had just received and which had not been opened. : Chancellor Frank Strong today said the Kansas-Missouri football game on Thanksgiving will not be played in Joplin, which has been trying to land the game. Strong said the game which has been in Kansas City the past 16 years should be played on one of the campuses. However, the teams have refused to pay the boosted ‘rental’ the owner of the appropriate Kansas City field has dictated this year. KU is trying to bring the game here.”
